Museum and surroundings
The Santa Teresa Fortress now houses a series of thematic rooms, including the Command Room, Powder Magazine, Chapel, Restoration Room, Blacksmith Workshop, Kitchen, Infirmary and Barracks, each reflecting different aspects of its historical function.
The museum also preserves military artifacts, religious objects, recovered relics, historical paintings and everyday tools that illustrate life inside the fortress during different periods.
Visitors can explore scale models of other colonial fortifications, including San Miguel, the Cerro of Montevideo, Santa Bárbara, Gorriti Island and Isla de Ratas, offering a broader understanding of the regional defensive network.
In the surrounding area, the cemetery and the remains of the former settlement of Santa Teresa are preserved, which once reached a population of around 128 inhabitants during the colonial period.
Together, these elements connect the fortress not only to its internal history, but also to the wider system of colonial fortifications in the South Atlantic.
