The Decree No. 11/09 of the Rocha Department Government establishes a fee for visitors to Cabo Polonio and users of the camping area in Santa Teresa National Park. Its purpose is to ensure safety and the maintenance of these protected natural areas. The full transcription of the decree is provided below for direct reference.
"Art. 6 - The taxable event for the fee shall be as follows: For visitors to Cabo Polonio, the fee shall be charged to all those who purchase a transport ticket to access the area. Transport operators shall collect the fee together with the ticket and shall act as withholding agents for all purposes.
For each ticket sold, a fee of ten Uruguayan pesos (UYU 10) shall be charged. The amount of the fee retained by the transport operator shall be paid at the same time as the municipal transport tax.
For visitors to Santa Teresa National Park, the fee shall be paid by all users of the camping area within the park.
In this case, the fee is intended solely to safeguard human life along the coastal area within the park. The amount to be paid shall be five Uruguayan pesos (UYU 5) per day for each day of use of the camping facilities.
The Ministry of National Defense shall act as the withholding agent for the fee and shall transfer the total collected amount to the Rocha Department Government.
